The right time for Liberty
"[...] what about the Liberty Alliance? They are still around. Sun was one of the original sponsors. Have you used that lately? I haven't."

Ask the average person in the street if they've used TCP/IP lately. Or GSM. Or CDMA.

The thing with Liberty is that, unlike Passport or Windows LiveID, it is pretty much invisible. Organizations deploy the protocol, roll out new functionality to their customers and nobody but a few identity techies knows or cares what wire protocols are involved.

You may well be using Liberty (or its close relation SAML) without even realizing - take a look at http://www.projectliberty.org/about/marketadoption.php - here are some highlights:

American Express
AOL
Deutsche Telekom
France Telecom
Fidelity Investments
General Motors
Star Alliance
"Three large US mobile operators" - they like their confidentiality, but that description doesn't exclude much of the industry
US, French, Norwegian Governments
Vodafone

I know of others who are unwilling to be named, as they consider the deployment of this technology part of their competitive edge.

"Too late for federated identity?" - I don't think so.
