- Recognition is not the same as respect.

The word "notoriety" implies someone whose name is recognized for damage done.
So Linus Torvalds is recognized. Richard Stallman is notorious.
There are values within fame.
You wrote:

Interesting that "value" can mean appreciated and also worth money. Those can be contradictory meanings.
Anyway, to say that Richard Stallman is "high value", that we "look up to" him and "respect" him? Significance is far from appreciation.
It's as easy to say that Richard Stallman began a damaging campaign which has produced only harm, and that he deserves to be shunned.
Both the compliment and the blame are judgments, based on the values one chooses to emphasize.
In sum, by assuming only one set of values could possibly be applied, this article is propaganda rather than ratiocination.
