Google Code Library and Code re-use
I read an article suggesting that google may index all the open-source code ever written. I can't remember the derivation.

This does prompt a very interesting application: that all the code on the internet could be via a service model be embedded into a code editor that tried to assist in your recycling effort. You could just type a function name, a service could automatically find a function that matches the name and suggest that function. That way you shared code you would be sharing the function... if the function had a bug or didnt work as expected it could be altered and reposted and the code library would become amazingly powerful.

I appreciate that the code base could be ugly ... but you could use the slashdot approach to weed out the bad and promote the good. Sources of practiced solutions (such as cpan, pear, cflib, ...) would become hubs in a google-like architecture for code search and would be very powerful tool.

kind regards,
