The Changing Business Model
Somewhere there is a warehouse, packed to the rafters with buggy whips. The market changed, and changed fast enough that the huge water wheel factory on the banks of a fast flowing Massachusetts river kept cranking out the same product, the same way they always did, until one day there wasn't a place to put everything they weren't selling. Then, they went broke, with the most surprised look on their face.

General Motors, IBM, PanAm, Microsoft and a long list of companies have succumbed to the dread fate of falling in love with the business model they began with.

Some recovered before they vanished, some have only now begun to feel the impact of leaving the model unchanged for years after it's useful life has ended.

But if you are going to be in business today, and can't engage your customers beyond the point of sale, your chances of long term success are small, and falling all the time.

Creating a community might seem self serving. It is self serving. But it can also serve a greater good, and if it does, others will join with you to raise the quality of life for everybody.
"A rising tide, lifts all ships" has always been an indisputable truth.

And if helping somebody else also helps me or my company, nobody loses. Community is a good idea, and it's a good idea that is ignored by any business at it's own peril.
