In Eolas' case, allowing Firefox to use plugins means that plugin-based websites retain viability. That, in turn, puts pressure on Microsoft to include plugin support in IE -- which they'll have to pay Eolas for.

Without plugin support in Firefox, MS could count on websites recoding around IE's limitations and Eolas wouldn't get a dime. In a competitive market, MS may be forced to take a license from Eolas.
