Roll your own
Why buy a Tivo when you can set up a cheap Linux box to do the same thing and then not have to pay a monthly subscription fee, have your box phone home with usage data, and have it limit your recordings/delete your saved programs via DRM?

Seems to me that rolling your own is the smart way to go.
