Never mind selling the research
The guaranteed money is in selling the student body.

Universities are in a great position to cut deals with businesses where they tack on a charge to student fees for a "service" that the students may or may not want.

NeoNapster was one example, but quite a UMich (for instance) got into a deal where they charged a mandatory fee for MSOffice to all students, then split the take with Microsoft. That's a deal that's hard to arrange with (for instance) OpenOffice, much less Debian.
