I still think Linux can be the desktop of the future, but the best way to accomplish that goal is to first make the desktop OS irrelevant. Once that happens, Linux will always win on price.

But Linux has to win the back end war, and the back end war is not about single server LANs anymore. Easy to develop distributed .NET apps are MS's new weapon, and the Linux side will need to counter both the quality of the applications AND the ease of development. Perhaps this is why Novell has so much invested in Mono.
