- So, which one is Enterprise Class?
-
As a mysql user, and postgres user, and oracle user, and sybase user, I don't use myql because it's cheap.
I use it - in many areas - because it's better. It's faster in most cases. It's got useful features that other databases haven't. It's much - orders of magnitude - easier to set up and get started than something like Oracle. Setting up replication is a breeze, too.
Now, mysql isn't perfect, by any means. There are (often complex) queries that really slow it down. There are some features associated with the high-end databases that it doesn't have.
While I'm not sure I would recommend my finance or personnel departments switch to mysql, I'm also convinced that mysql (other people may have other relatively lightweight open-source databases they prefer - I'm OK with that) is in many cases the better tool for the job when it comes to providing web services or similar workloads. In the areas where mysql excels, I would happily pay for it, while some of the more senior databases wouldn't get in the frame even if they were free. - Posted by: ptribble Posted on: 11/07/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
