Altruism
Regarding principal vs. principle:

All things considered, I prefer counting on enlightened self-interest rather than altruism. Most standards work depends on multiple players seeing it as in their advantage to grow the pie rather than the slice.

That, in turn, depends on having multiple players with enough of a stake to prevent one from dominating. The power distribution can still have (for instance) on dominant vendor as long as there are credible alternatives so that the customers can "gang up" to demand cooperation.

There are some timeless lessons to be learned from MicroChannel.
