Gnome Panel
Dana,

You don't have to write a cron script. In Gnome there is a Panel applet to add an automated security download/upgrade button for Debian. Redhat has a simular button for Up2Date. You place it on the Gnome Panel and when there are updates it changes the Icon to indicate updates. You depress the Icon and it downloads and installs them for you.

If you are using Fedora the Up2Date button is installed by defualt on the panel.

Also I am shocked that you seem unable to use the gui front ends for apt and yum, , Synaptic (You don't have to run Debian to use this as there are versions for Redhat and Suse) let alone know the cli commands which you should know anyhow if you have used Linux for any amount of time. To upgrade your system all you have to do is open Synaptic, press the mark all upgrade button, review what you are upgrading if desired, and then hit the apply button. KPackage has a simular feature as does Yum GUI.

This is such a non-issue.
