Open Systems
Apple's OS X is based on an open operating system,
namely BSD Unix (Linux-ish). So much so that many
developers have been able to re-compile and make
some alterations to port their programs. OS X supports
X Windows and all of the UNIX underpinnings (API's
and command line calls.) For many developers, this IS
a dream come true. While it is still true that Apple does
have it's own API's that are "closed", that would not stop
any developer or user from using the OS since there is
so much there that is truly open. This may well be the
reason why Apple is not in the fray of the OPEN
argument. On top of that Apple is working on sustaining
it's positive PR. If there is a messy argument between
Linux and Microsoft, let it be their PR (public relations)
mess. While I am quite certain the Apple does care
about the future of open software ( their OS and Sever
package makes extensive use of such software) I am
sure that Apple would rather ride on the PR it has. The
only sad part I see is that now that Apple clearly has
some great success and momentum the press and the
PR machines are attacking Apple. How about letting
THE innovative company enjoy it's well deserved
positive accolodes?? God knows that Microsoft's
AWFUL PR machines had been in KILL the competition
mode for years, incuding demeaning the Mac and
Apple!! Perhaps the PR machines need some
regulation...perhaps not..
