Regarding the DSL service
Regarding your DSL speed issue, what is the proximity to the DSLAM (provider infrastructure) as this can have an effect on the speed averages (DSL speed advertises peak not average). As DSL is basically converting a digital channel over what is more than likely legacy infrastructure, the actual speed may very depending on the amount of usage at the DSLAM and (even though DSL is typically not party line like cable or Wi-Fi). It can also be hit occasionally by the Frame Relay back end (most of the DSL back end is Frame Relay if it is from SBC/AT&T/whatever they are called now). The speed ratings that they provide in the advertising may in fact be lowered by a number of other factors besides proximity, as if the wires are old (not updated in the past 15 years) this can cause some latency or reduced speed. What was the speed that they got from the testing tools (DSL providers have this cool toy for getting the actual maximum speed rating) and are you using the upstream figures or downstream figures (typical may be something like 384k up, 1.5M down)?
