Did something change?
This may seem like a shock, but is it possible that the Linux patching has surpassed the Mac and Windows operating systems?

I haven't noticed anything changing on the Linux front since the 90s -- the Linux distros, like Microsoft and Apple, have always provided updates for whatever they ship with their systems.

Of course, a Linux distro includes vastly more "stuff" than the others, but that's nothing to do with the topic at hand.

You could always mirror one of the mirror sites and update against the packages (e.g. rpm -F /usr/packages/updates/$VERSION/*.rpm)

Get outside of the included files and you're still on your own -- Gentoo won't help me update my copy of Railroad Tycoon, for instance. To be fair, though, they do keep me up to date with VMWare workstation.

OK, maybe you have a point after all.
