You pay more and get less
Multicore processors does not add speed to most desktop applications. Rather they decrese speed to most desktop applications. I will not be buying multicore systems for may desktop systems. Pay more and you get less speed.

They only work better with multi-user servers through workload distribution.

Bad news is that Moore laws is dead. We no longer has the benefit of it.
