My thoughts
"Most reject volunteerism in search of making money, satisfying career ambitions, relaxing or spending time with friends and family."

Some volunteerism is fine, and I'm glad to help out when I can - but I don't think it can (or should) sustain an economy or nation. And yes, I think family comes before even volunteerism - if I am to volunteer, it certainly won't be at the expense of my family.

I'd work towards a balance. Volunteering should certainly be a part of that balance, but it shouldn't override everything else.

"Each of these rather nice people deserve a rather nice environment to do their work in."

If they work for it, sure, they deserve it. But I'm definitely not of the belief that people "deserve" things just because they exist. I don't believe in a "you get everything you think you deserve, no strings attached" society.

"I urge you all to instead focus on solutions."

Agreed. But let's make sure it's really a problem to begin with - we seem to have a lot of gimmicks "solving" problems which were never really much of a big deal in the first place.

"In many of these topics I had the wrong end of the stick, typically clutching to a view that was either antiquated and less informed than it could have been, and then when I became more informed, I was happy to adjust my perspective."

Frankly, I'm more concerned about being informed than being "antiquated." Many of the best ideas are the old ones, especially since there are so many technologies that seem to be changing for the sake of change and not really improving anything.
