Three reasons this is a bad paradigm...
Security, security and...let's see, what was that other thing...oh yeah, security. The comment "enterprise customers are likely to take their time moving sensitive data into Amazon?s RDS effort" should be nominated for the understatement of the year award. What's more likely is that enterprise customers avoid moving their sensitive data into Amazon's RDS effort like the plague. I can see where, for non-sensitive data, this could make a lot of sense. For customer or vendor specific data that I don't want the general public to have access to, it's a non-starter. It's not that I don't trust Amazon, it's that I don't trust having an internet facing database for sensitive data, period. Sure, if a webserver can access sensitive data and that webserver gets pwned, that sensitive data can probably be compromised relatively easily. All you can do is make it as difficult and time consuming as possible. Having an internet facing database is the exact opposite of that approach.
