M/F competition
There use to be plug compatible m/f from Amdahl and Fujitsu. When IBM switched from bi-polar to CMOS technology, the competition was unable to make the same switch. They have left the field.
A few years ago, there was a small manufacturer of a PC server capable of running z-series software. The target was very small shops of under 300 MIPs. There was no m/f from IBM small enough. The software stack cost on a m/f site is directly proportional to the CPU power, so you never want to have excess CPU. There was some litigation from IBM and I believe they bought them out.

Today, the m/f big competition is not from other mainframe manufactureres, but from large Unix servers. In fact, at my client site, IBM z-series (aka mainframe) is getting pressure from IBM p-series (aka AIX servers).
