You can get them to waive the costs
I had a very similar problem with Sprint. I simply sent an email to dan@sprint.com, and within 48 hours I had a free AIRAVE device with no additional monthly charges. The device works well. I don't even have it connected directly to my router. I hung the device off an 802.11g wireless bridge, and it still works great. Talk to customer service, escalate the issue, email the CEO, whatever you have to do. You can get it for free.
