Interesting perspective, but you left out some things.
The cable companies still enjoy monopoly positions in many locales. In places where there are two forms of service available, growth is higher but profits are under pressure by discounts and competitive offers. So, if there were comparatively as many competitors, the situation would probably be the same for cable/video providers as it is for wireless companies.

The handset issue has been a self-inflicted wound by the US wireless companies; only in the US are the rules so arcane, the agreements so byzantine and restrictive. When you compare our system to other countries where GSM service has been in use for years and handsets are interchangeable, the outcome has been more predictable.
