Phone service
I'll be 60 next year and last week I FINALLY decided to buy a cell PHONE because I have an older car that breaks down sometimes.

He is talking about the Swiss-Army-knife type phones. A lot of people just want an actual PHONE. I bought a TracFone for $10. It can cost up to 33 cents per minute and you have to add minutes every 90 days or it deactivates. However, at their website you can sign up for a 30 minutes-30 days-20 cents per minute plan ($6/mos) that automatically extends when necessary and avoids deactivation. For $50 you can get a "double minutes" card that permanently doubles the amount of minutes added, cutting the price to as low as 10 cents per minute.

Obviously they don't want to push the "if you really need just a phone with text" plans. And obviously, people who feel they just have to endlessly yack about "whatever" will have to pay for the privilege. But if you really just need to stay in touch, there are many prepaid options for way less than even $50 per month.
