RE: Judge's idea to outlaw links won't save newspapers
Newspapers have ALWAYS had the ad-supported model - some newspapers and magazines are 80% ads! The subscription / buying only pays the other 20% of the costs of delivering the product to people.
The idea that "News is Free" it a great thought - but it has NEVER been free and no free model will every work.
If you think it should be free go out and start writing and reporting and publishing everything around your neighborhood / city - oh yea, ask for NO money whatsoever and then think about how you are going to live without anyone giving you anything for your work - afterall that news you collected should be free and no one is going to pay for your effort and time and energy that you went through to give it to them.
The news industry wants to make a profit on the news "product" and dose NOT want to give it away for free. If all newspapers were told that all news must be given away and they cannot earn any money for collecting and making it available, then in 1 day they are gone. They are upset that the work done by behind the scenes people (staff) and the reporters are having their material used by others and not getting paid for that use who then "share" it with everyone. It comes down to earning money for their work in a equitable manner.
Writing a collumn as a hobby and writing in order to earn a living to stay ALIVE makes all the difference when you are having this arguement about anything artistically produced.
