we should be subscribing to the person
not to the person on a particular site.

In other words, we need to be able to publish from a single location, like our own PC or cloud space. We put out pictures, or 'tweets', or statuses, etc, and they can then be consumed by the people subscribed to us in whatever format they like.

Social networks were a nice in-between solution, but as noted, there are far too many to handle.
