So Dell (and Lenovo) dragged the rest down?
Looking at same period last year on that chart, only Dell and Lenovo did poorly. (mostly Dell) In fact, Dell is really primarily responsible for dragging the whole chart into the toilet. If you take out Dell's horrible performance, the industry as a whole looks fairly positive.

The real question is, why did Dell tank so badly while HP sales remained stable? One obvious difference is HP sells far more desktops to consumers, not businesses. Perhaps Dell got so focused on sucking up to big business that they ignored consumers. It seems to me consumers turn their personal equipment over at a FAR higher rate than big businesses.

I guess HP chose their market focus wisely, particularly with a new OS on the horizon. Average consumers don't give a crap which version of Windows is on their computer as long as it works and runs their software. Most consumers won't hold off buying a PC for 9 months because a new OS version is coming out, either. They buy it when they need it. So, retail-focused HP kept chugging along with steady sales while Dell tanked.

And then there's Gateway which seems to have no market focus whatsoever. Who's running that place anyway? I tried (and failed) to buy a laptop from them a week ago. After a lot of frustration with their web site and supply chain, I finally gave up and bought another brand. Anyone want to bet on that sinking ship?
