enterprise--clouds and firewalls
One of the reasons we built both the Private Network Edition of Etherpad
(downloadable behind the firewall) and the On-Demand version of Etherpad
(hosted in the cloud) is to give IT Managers choice. Security concerns are
paramount to companies and while we believe the cloud is the future, it may be
5-10 years before we see wide-scale adoption across large companies. As
Keynes said, "In the long-run, we are all dead." Etherpad and Google Docs are
not replacements for Word in terms of *some* word processing use cases.
However, for many knowledge workers, seamless collaboration and word
processing tools are sufficient for 98 percent of their work.

It will be interesting to see what happens in 2010 when Microsoft releases the
next version of Office. It seems to me that in the real-time era, customers will
demand really real time collaboration and sharing capabilities.
