Misses the value of real time data
While I wholeheartedly agree with the point that $2500+ smart meters are a costly approach to achieving efficiency, at least before they're networked to specific appliances, the value of energy use in real time is missed. Relying only on your electric bill data offers no opportunity to act in the moment.

This level of monitoring doesn't require fancy, utility-grade smart meters. (And it's refreshing to see these smart VC's concurring.) A variety of simple whole house monitoring devices are available in the $150 range.

We used a TED the energy detective attached to an $80 router to graph our home's electricity. It's here: http://www.energycircle.com/ted_display.php

We're still assessing savings, but so far the mere presence of real time information in this household of 4 has produced a 16% reduction.
