Let's also factor in the theft factor in the overall cost of Kindle; lose one early in one's college career and be confronted with the choice of buying a new one, or buying a replacment set of textbooks.

From the thief's point of view, I can see a large Kindle resale business opportunity. If not on the campus from which the Kindle was liberated, then on another campus down the Interstate.
