Separating data from applications is a very interesting idea. It might go a long way to solving a major problem of data ownership. If data is stored on local machines it is owned by the owners of the servers. So basically the cloud won't be a complete solution as you will still need to maintain a large data base plus back ups.

The few things that spring to mind are what happens when the data is outside the companies box?
You would need to encrypt most data transmissions to prevent listening. Also once the data hits the app does ownership transfer? If not great, if so ouch you might as well not spend the money to store it outside of the cloud.

For a while I believed the market was going to address data ownership but increasingly I am convinced a legal solution is going to become necessary. The first country on the planet with liberal data ownership laws will become a huge data store house.
