First of all, ANY business where the only plan is a parasitic reliance on the existance and performance of another company is setting itself up for a fall. It may seem unlikely that the beat you live off is going to die any time soon but, as this post proves, shifts of focus can occur which leaves everyone on the hop. It's a dangerous strategy to pursue exclusively.
Which is why I like the way Facebook is evolving in this area to make it easier for developers who want to exploit the phenomenal growth in Facebook user numbers. It seems now the best approach would be to deliver your app away from the Facebook site, but make it easily accessible and usable through Facebook Connect. This means that users can still find out about it from Facebook, authenticate using their Facebook ID; invite their friends to come and use it; and post their activity back to their news feed (which further promotes it). Almost all of the benefitts from before, although you lose the user security that comes from "embeddedness" perhaps. But on the plus side you are not hamstrung by the Facebook platform and you could also have one app server Facebook and non-Facebook users.
