It's not just the economy, it makes sense
IT shops are far to quick to spend on new hardware and systems when
their existing systems haven't even paid for themselves yet. I've seen too
many shops half-implement systems and then run off to the next great
project. IT leaders need to plan long-term when putting in an SAP for
example. What's the organization we have to set up around it going to
look like? What about staffing? An operating budget for programming
changes? Sure this will take money away from new projects but dollars
invested in a system that's already running pay back a lot faster than
those in brand new systems. It's called return on assets (ROA) and is
going to win you more credibility than a new system in today's economy.
