Sources and attribution
in many cases the newspapers need to remember that it is not their own words that they're guarding. It is the words of their sources. In most cases the plain facts and the words of a third party can be claimed as the property of the news agency. Furthermore, they seem to forget that copyright includes Fair Use, which specifically allows verbatim quoting for the purpose of comment (and some other uses). They themselves often depend on it.

If the newspapers don't want the fraction of a penny for attribution of quotes that the law allows the blogger to use for free, then they can suck eggs. (as in l'oeuf, love, the big fat zero). I'm perfectly happy to attribute a quote without the link if they don't want it.

At the same time bloggers need to be aware of their Fair Use obligations, actually do the commentary, and keep the quotes reasonable. IOW, write your own copy and keep the quotes reasonable.
