My biggest concern of using anything Windows is getting stuck with Windows (as in lock-in). I want the flexibility to be able to move between devices and OSs, if by chance something more interesting arrives on the market in the future.

If Microsoft were to offer some good network applications/services that are Windows independent, then I might give them a try. Otherwise, I will stick with non-Microsoft applications/services.
