Very simple Larry
The password system will stay for a long while longer for two simple reasons.

1) If a password isn't stolen, the user typing the password feels like he/show is in control and under no obligation to share it with some other entity.

2) People don't trust central organizations. Look at the Brits and the data leaks they had the past 48 months. Crazy. What about Monster.com? There's another laugh.

By using passwords properly, a worst case scenario compromises ONE THING ONLY. If someone compromises the back-end of central system (like a CA root certificate or something) the whole system falls apart and everything is compromised.

It's pretty easy to see the answer to your question.
