Will Partition Hard Drive for Food!

I'm on the fence as to where my IT career will go. I currently technical writer but I know I need to keep those technical skills current because I'll eventually need to look for good ol' IT grunt work again...

...but there's the rub. At this time, if you aren't in a cozy position in ERP, document management, or PM, you may find yourself on the losing end. I see more and more job postings for specialized positions that would essentially require you to have spent your previous 5+ years with the company posting the job... and having had said company spend training dollars on you.

Getting your foot in the door now may be impossible because those already there will be blocking the entrance. And, as witnessed from many, many postings I've read about H1B job replacements, there's not a lot of IT good will out there (no one's gonna take pity on you).

If you've got a job, hold on to it! Make yourself a little more valuable (read up, practice, and extend your services) and drop your request for that conference or training this year. Just be glad you've got a spot.
