Partially their own fault
While it is certainly true that the internet is taking away many of their readers, and that reading in general is declining, their own editorial policies have also pushed away subscribers. Newspapers like the Times used to pride themselves on their unbiased approach to the news, and held their reporters to a very high standard. Today, many papers like the Times cater only to the far left, and are more than willing to put unsubstantiated opinion on the front page as "news". This has alienated many readers, and left them with a dwindling base of subscribers. Perhaps if they returned to their roots and focused on professional journalism instead of fluff and bias their reader base might come back.
