The future is almost here
While this point (mainstream market is not the same as the adult market) is certainly valid, it is probably irrelevant. I believe that many of the forces pushing content to the net apply equally well to both markets.

For example, my wife and I are pushing middle age. We're looking around our house and thinking "Why do we need all of this stuff?" We have already ripped all of our CDs and we're ready to put them into storage. We almost never buy audio on physical media any more. Every member of the family has an iPod so it isn't like we really need to.

I also have a year-old Sony PRS-505 ebook reader and am busy taking all of my printed content to eBooks. I haven't bought a physical book since I got the Sony.

We only use digital cameras (still and video) and I've been working on scanning the old stuff. All of my descendants will be able to get a complete library of every picture that I inherited as well as everything that I snapped myself.

Video is just an extension of that. Santa brought me a new Apple TV and now I'm thinking that buying DVDs is a waste of space. I don't watch all of that "bonus content" anyway so do I really need to add more shelves full of content when 1TB drives are below $200?

The tools for ubiquitous access to personal digital content libraries aren't there yet but things are getting pretty interesting.

Some time in the future I'll be chilling out in a nursing home somewhere but I won't be bored - I'll have my music library, my books, my family photos and all of my favorite movies and TV shows loaded on whatever will pass for a laptop at that time. I sure as heck won't have a big pile of Blu-Ray disks.

Just my 20 milicents, YMMV
