The opposite would have happened at Microsoft...
If rumors were that Steve Ballmer's health was failing and he would have to step down as CEO of Microsoft, Microsoft stock would probably triple over night. There's no denying that top leadership is important, but in Apple's case, it's a bit ridiculous and over blown. Jobs' has surrounded himself with highly qualified and capable talent, many of whom would be qualified to fill his shoes should he step down. Unlike the sycophants Ballmer is surrounded by, where as the logic would be the lesser of two evils.
