send your avatar..? its you. You are going, not sending some "avatar." Its just a virtual representation, not unlike putting an Icon on an application on your computer... or a little picture of whatever besides your name on a IM program... its still you.
You also assume it has to be all cartoony. You dont ahve to have rabbit ears, it can be made to be very professional. In Second Life you could even (if you have access to someone who has the ability, there is a company that does it) make your avatar look extremely just like yourself, even using real life photos for facial texturing.
Just having a buncha peoples faces on screens and all talking isnt the same as seeing a full 3D virtual meeting room with people sitting around a table, easy to follow what is going on, showing presentations everyone can watch. Have a teleconference with 50 people with like 15 presenters... it'll take you twice as long in teleconferencing assuming everyone knows what they are doing in teleconferencing or in a virtual world, as well as assuming your using the right tools for the job.
