Ho hum, Intel late to the party... again
It's hard to get enthused about USB 3 when eSATA has been around quite some time at 3Gb/s (say 300MB/s). The physical standard for SATA 6Gb/s was ratified back in July, the full standard should be available by the end of the year.

The FireWire3200 standard has been available since the end of last year, but since Apple seems to be dropping support for FireWire, it's days may be numbered even with a 6.4Gb/s spec on the drawing board.

USB will survive because it is supported by Intel, who will continue to put it on every PC because they make the motherboards. The fact that it is an inferior technology to both eSATA and FireWire seems irrelevant to all except those who really do want to use fast connections and are prepared to pay the price for an extra port or two.
