Be green and make green - IT needs to be both.
I agree, Green IT really is an oxymoron; insofar as green anything is ? green aviation, green motoring, green petrochemical industry, etc. But that doesn?t mean that we shouldn?t be improving the carbon footprint of the IT industry. We all know there?s a lot of ?greenwash? going on, especially in IT, which is why Capgemini recently set out to uncover how its partners (Google, EMC, HP, IBM and Sun Microsystems) are responding to environmental challenges, not just in-house, but throughout a product?s lifecycle, from manufacture to disposal.

Where IT has a unique position is that it can be used to help all other sectors reduce their carbon footprint, too.

Capgemini?s Green IT Report 2008 ? The Computer Equipment Lifecycle Survey (http://www.capgemini.com/resources/thought_leadership/green_it_report_2008/) provides a complete analysis and rating of all aspects of a provider?s environmental program. The Capgemini report also considers what it takes for a company to consider itself ethically ?green? for broader CSR credentials.
