I hope Apple stands pat.
Apple makes money on the players, not so much the music. The can update the firmware to support Microsoft's or other vendors DRM, if needed, and keep selling them.

We can live without iTunes. I use AmazonMP3 these days anyway.

Apple is just about the only entity that can keep these greedy bastaads in check. Lets hope they continue to do so.
