The weapon of choice on the war on coal
Khosla accurately points out coal is base load power, and the replacement of coal is not simple. Coal represents about 60% of U.S. power generation, all of it base load.

Nuclear is the only technology which can provide base load power at scale in the next 50 years. Period. That is why China plans 100 new nuclear plants in the next twenty years, and Brazil plans 50-60 new nuclear plants in the next 40 years.

Perhaps wind, solar, tides, and energy, along with geothermal can be combined to provide an alternative to base load at some point in the second half of this century. But realize the higher the randomness of power generation of of wind and solar increases storage requirements. Such an architecture could be unwieldy.

Also, why is Khosla talking about compressed air for grid storage? Pumped storage hydroelectric has been used hydroelectric reservoirs to store energy for years, and the quickest, easiest way to increase grid storage would be to adapt more hydroelectric plants to support pumped storage.
