Demand-driven market
You might be right if there were a price gap between the product lines of Dell and HP et al and the Mac product line, and if there were a demand for computers with prices in that gap.

But I think all price ranges are now available. And that Mac buyers are responding to panache rather than price.

So Dell would gain little by increasing the prices of all its product line (as a result of product improvements), especially because the market seems to be moving toward cheaper and cheaper PC's.

The reason for Dell to sell its brand is that when it becomes a "Me, too" operation entirely, profits can grow only with the market. Makes ownership like a low interest bank account. Michael Dell and friends on the Board may decide they can make a better return by selling the brand and making other investments. Especially if they're old enough to retire. Which Mr. Dell obviously is.
