Distinguishing a product
If every competitor builds its products using the facilities of the same few manufacturers, then there's nothing in the product's assembly to distinguish one from another.

The difference then relies on design and the selection of parts to be used.

Dell doesn't spend much on technological innovation.

The Dell-only parts have led to complaints about both the quality of the parts and the diffieculty and expense of replacement. That's while Dell controls the manufacturing process. The company would probably find using parts generally available the line of least resistance.

So Dell becomes a product line distinguished by the colors of its boxes and a reputation established long before. It's a brand.

What's the next step(?), sell the brand to another company, take the money, and go home.
