Evil is as evil does.
We know Microsoft is evil based on actions through it's history. Remember Lotus, WordPerfect, Netscape, Netware, IBM's OS/2. These products and companies were defeated not based on technical merit or business savy. Microsoft used dishonest tactics, monopolistic behavior and illegal backroom deals to gain the upper hand and destroy the competitive landscape for these products and companies. In each case, a strong argument could be made for the stronger market position and greater technical merit of the competitors product. However, Microsoft proved that it is not above lying, cheating, stealing and bullying to not only gain the upper hand, but to utterly destroy the competition. It's been twice found guilty of monopolistic behavior and "punished" by the government.

This is why Microsoft is considered by many to be "evil". Until Google rises to that or a similar level of behavior, many are content to wait and watch. I use google search, but not gmail, or any of their other products. Part of this choice is out of simple preference for competing products and part is out of caution in giving too much authority to one provider.

I appreciate Google's corporate motto of "Do no evil". It may not mean much, but so far, I've seen nothing to indicate that they are going against that mantra. Time, as always, will tell.

Until then, please don't call a corporation evil until it's earned those stripes. Microsoft has worked hard for that title and I don't think it's polite to simply hand the label to another company that hasn't earned it.
