Just a guess here but...
Maybe David feels that this is true:

"many billions of dollars == extraordinary corruption because after all, how can you get that rich if you're not corrupt?"

Or perhaps David is misquoting the bible in his thinking: Money is the root of all evil.

What most people miss is that this isn't what the bible says, but hey, you gotta give the bible thumpers their due when it comes to misinterpreting the bible.

Anyway I think that in David's mind it all comes down to this: David isn't filthy stinking rich, so he's not corrupt. Bill Gates is filthy stinking rich, so he *must* be corrupt.

I could be wrong though, as I told my ex-spouse a number of times "no, I can't read your mind, I must have been absent from school the day they taught that", and I'm quite certain that David's mind is not one I would want to read anyway.
