You do realise that...
1) Having tested both I can state a personal preference, and
2) The HTC - and it's actually the T-Mobile European variant the MDA Compact IV - has had a number of ROM upgrades since launch which have improved responsiveness. I believe a quick Google search on, say, ROM 1.93 will show this. You'll also note that I use the word significantly - the iPhone is slightly easier to use but only slightly.

As for capacitive technology, well that kind of sucks when you're using gloves so it's kind of horses for courses, isn't it?

The iPhone is 'so 2007' because it's not really offering anything new from it's launch incarnation that differentiate it from any other smartphone.
