RE: eBay has Amazon envy: Cuts fees to get more fixed pricing
The problem with these "third party" sellers is reliability; is the product exactly as described?; will it arrive in a week, or a month?; if there's a problem, will they fix it?; will it even be sent?

I had a problem with one of Amazon's third party sellers, and found that Amazon basically washes their hands of it; they "sort of" provide customer support, and gave only lip service to the problem. Their basic policy is the third party is responsible. If Amazon sells the product, they fix it; if a third party does, then they just mediate. Caveat emptor.

Of course this is the basic problem with Ebay; fly-by-night sellers, who have no interest, or lose interest in customer satisfaction. The satisfaction survey helps, but isn't 100% certain; I was shafted by more than one with a 100% satisfaction.

But lest I be perceived as negative, my overall experiences have been good. I think most of the sellers are legit, want to do the right thing and Amazon and Ebay try hard to ensure they are. But I've learned not to risk what I can't afford to lose; for expensive purchases, I'll go to the live retailer, and pay more, because I know if I have a problem a week, month or year later, they'll (likely) be there and be willing (maybe reluctantly) to make things right. You get what you pay for in thus world, and there are some people who don't give a damn for doing the right thing.
