Good article, Larry.
Software companies are running out of ways to make you buy their latest version. There just isn't anything in newer versions that increase productivity. So they have to raise their revenue somewhere.

I think it is better for companies to hire their own internal IT staff to support these softwares. They can at least control costs. If the software you buy works like it is supposed to there is really no need to pay someone to support it. It is only when the software chokes that you have to call support.

With open source where it is today I prefer to think it is better to hire your own internal developers instead of being raked over the coals by vendors who able to offer less and less but charge more and more.

Good database managers are hard to find. But I think it is worth the money to hire your own and pay for his education.

Internal IT is becoming rare as companies want to pay outsiders to do the work. But I believe the trend will come back around as companies realize the benefits of doing it in house and the drawbacks of outsourcing.
