Traffic Shaping is not the reason
Tom:

I suggest you review the material that Limelight Networks has put out regarding the Olympics streaming infrastructure.

The reason why the Net has not melted is because the content is not on the Internet. Its cached at local ISPs, so the streaming video is no more than one or two hops max from your client.

Limelight has regional data centers that are SRDF mirroring 5 petabytes of storage that is shared for all their customers including the Olympics. It is a private 40 gig fiber backbone that is not connected to the Internet. In turn, they are either co-located in the same datacenters with the ISP media streaming servers themselves or they are using leased line Optical Carrier connections to the local ISPs. So if you are using Verizon or Cablevision or Pac Bell or whatever, you are getting the replicated content directly off their network. You are not going out to the cloud at all.

If they are doing any traffic shaping its minimal.
